Sunny with a Chance of Pancakes
Start your day at the Festival with a hearty Maine breakfast. From Thursday until Sunday, we are serving a pancake breakfast that starts at 7 a.m. in the Eating Tent. It’s only $3 for children ($6 for adults) to enjoy all-you-can-eat blueberry pancakes with sausage, juice, milk, and coffee for the grown-ups. From there, you can head over to the Children’s Tent, a great place to rest and play in the shade. There are toys and games for the littles, with playground equipment and lots of space to just run. Enjoy face painting, temporary tattoos, arts and crafts for kids of all ages. Let them get the wiggles out before you head to the day’s next awesome event.
Make Them Walk the Plank
We arghhh going full pirate at this year’s Festival with a tour of the pirate ship Must Roos and a pirate puppet show that will delight adults as well as children. If you just can’t get enough of all things scurvy, learn Piracy 101 at the North Entertainment Tent and investigate pirate weapons and hear a cannon fire at 5 p.m. Your little mateys will be swordfighting and plundering all day long. See the schedule for the full list of piratical happenings.
Sunday Fun Day
Sunday is Family Day at the Maine Lobster Festival. The 1-mile Kids Fun Run kicks off at 8:30 a.m., and the Children’s Parade begins at 10 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. is the Codfish Carry and the Lobster Eating Competition at noon for your hungry buggers. And the Diaper Derby, perhaps the cutest event of all time, crawls away with your hearts at 12:30 p.m. on the Maine Stage. The Crate Race is another spectacular show, and that goes down in the harbor at 2 p.m. Kids can register at 7 a.m. for a spot to participate in this fast-paced race that requires balance and agility.
Budding Marine Biologists
Kids and parents love the Marine Tent, a staple at the Festival, where you can take a deep dive into our Maine marine environment. Pick up and gently touch lobsters, clams, crabs, and starfish. Learn how we can protect these animals and our fragile ecosystem. It’s fun to learn and explore in this hands-on experiential area.
The Classic Midway
No day at the fair would be complete without a few thrills and spills. We have rides for tots and bigger kids and a giant slide everyone will love. Let them try their hand at a classic carnival game and hope to win a giant, stuffed prize. Treat them to an ice cream cone or a cotton candy before you carry them to the car over your shoulder, exhausted from a magical day at the Festival.
There is so much to explore for children and their families at the Maine Lobster Festival. You should probably plan to spend more than one day in Rockland this August.
